Burning of Violence, 2016, by Haley Hughes is a 13 color screenprint. Haley painted this composition by hand and of her own imagination, and Overpass’s master printer Julia Samuels created each color separation by hand, carefully tracing each detail Haley’s original painting. Burning of Violence is able to maintain Haley’s unique style because the artists did not process the composition through the computer or any other mechanical means.
Burning of Violence shows a bonfire of all the world’s tools for war and murder. While maybe immediately unsettling, Burning of Violence shows us a hopeful promise for the future, as paralleled in Isiah 2:4: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
